Turn left onto Beading Path:
  Nalla Lorton, bead artist
I'm just an old hippie
and as such am not at all new to beads.  I grew up in the little town of Sierra Madre, California nestled against the San Gabriel Mountains.  When I was about 16 a color-blind neighbor boy about my age asked me to go to the bead store with him to help him pick out beads for a hippie necklace.  He was afraid that if left to his own devices he would end up with colors bad enough to alienate even his best friends.  I agreed to go and was completely amazed at this little store that sold nothing but beads BEADS BEADS!   Of course I bought a couple of dollars worth for myself and had made up strings for everyone I knew within just a few days.  (Of course we didn't do anything fancy in those days.  We just strung 'em up and wore 'em until they broke.

Within a few months I had learned a simple flower weave design, a permutation of the right-angle weave.  I used to sit in my bed late at night weaving strings of these little flowers.  My sister-in-law accused me of being the only teenager in town who had beads in her bed instead of crumbs!  I thought that was hilarious and was proud of the image.  She then commissioned me to make a 36 inch rope using the flower weave all in black seed beads.  It was beautiful to me, looking like black lace and so elegant!

Merge into Creative Way:
Also during those teen-aged hippie years my interests turned to all kinds of arts.  I took a few art classes at Pasadena High School which gave me a great foundation in color theory, learning how to manipulate the hue of paints from bright to dull, and from light to dark.  When I went on to Pasadena City College I signed up as an art major and got experience (although no degree) with pottery, 3-D design, drawing, painting, and a little commercial art.

Right on the Road of Life:
Then, of course all the usual life events happened: love, marriage, children, divorce, and beads kind of went into the background for a while.  Nonetheless I always had some sort of creative activity going on in my life.  I discovered early on that I am less than half a person (and a very grumpy mal-adjusted one at that!) if I'm not actively involved in creativity.

Interestingly enough, when I went back to school at the ripe old age of 36 I ended up majoring in mathematics and eventually graduated with both a bachelors degree and a masters degree in math!  I then taught math at the college level for the next number of years.  This year represents a temporary departure from that road.

THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE BEAD!

Curve back into Beading Path:
During the summer of 2006 I began researching online what people had been doing with beads recently and was amazed by some of the things I saw! (to get a look at some of the people and things which inspired me see my "links" page)  I had no idea about bead weaving!  I had never seen freeform and sculptural beadwork!  For weeks my brain was a-buzz with magical words like embellishment, peyote, nbdele, Swarovski, Miyuki, Nymo, Fireline, Sharps, Pony, etc.  Then I began to use the words, to learn the techniques, buy the beads, BUY THE BEADS, BUY THE BEADS!  And weave the beads.  And obsess over the beads.

My infatuation with beads begat the name of my website:  It is a combination of the words "unique" and "iniquities" because becoming a bead artist has proven to be a uniquely and nearly sinful obsession for me.

And now I'm ready to share the beads and my beadwork with the world.

HI WORLD -- COME LOOK AT MY BEADS,
